Esperanza Spalding, HMI '01Esperanza Spalding, alumna of the Henry Mancini Institute, received a Grammy award in the Best New Artist category at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 13, 2011.

A 26-year old, classically trained jazz/chamber music fusion musician and singer, Spalding has been making headlines in the jazz world since her debut album in 2006 and recently performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Terence Blanchard and Herbie Hancock. While attending the Henry Mancini Institute summer program in 2001, Spalding caught the attention of jazz vocalist Patti Austin and music producer Gregg Field, who hired her to perform a concert in tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Esperanza Spalding is a Telarc/Heads Up/Concord recording artist.
