The Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble, affectionately called JV1, and the smaller ensemble Frost Extensions, studies and explores jazz vocal music ranging from the styles of The Singers Unlimited, New York Voices and Swingle Singers, to contemporary new works by Frost faculty and students. Under the inspired direction of acclaimed vocalist Kate Reid, associate professor and director of the Frost School of Music’s Jazz Vocal Performance program, the Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble performs regularly in South Florida, and has appeared at regional and national conferences such as the Jazz Education Network (JEN) conference and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Alumni of the program enjoy active careers performing as solo artists in various genres, in vocal groups, studio musicians and directing vocal jazz ensembles worldwide. Graduates of the Jazz Vocal Performance program also continue on to complete degrees in jazz performance, music therapy, music education, and music business.

Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble, Extensions, as well as individual student soloists and vocal arrangers have earned numerous DownBeat student awards over the years, including five in 2015. Extensions and Jazz Vocal I won first and second place respectively at the 2015 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. Recent guest artists to the Jazz Vocal Performance program include Cyrille Aimée, Karrin Allyson, Gretchen Parlato, and this year with Becca Stevens at Festival Miami.
